According to fertile natural resource and the perfect of varieties of coral, beach and beautiful islands pushed the Royal Forest Department had to survey this area and prepared to declare as the national park which at first namely " Hat Sai Ri National Park". Until February 24, 1999 it had been change to "Mu Ko Chumphon National Park" which cover area about 317 square kilometers and sea area about 165,969 rai.
Flora and Fauna
Chumporn Islands National Park has a lot of fertile and diversified natural resources which is very important in the term of genetic sources of wildlifes and knowledge for studying and research.
- Mangrove forest, at present, this mangrove forest is very fertile covered area about 17,375 rais. You can find this forest in the Chumporn canal, Sawee canal and Sawee Tao canal.
- Primary rainforest is found only in the area of mountains and big islands such as Samed island, Matra island, Kula island, etc. Found plants are Yang wood class such as Resak tembage, Hopea odorata Roxb., Anisoptera costata Korth., ParaShorea stellata Kurz.
- Beach forest where you can find the small trees with spiral trunks, a lot of short branches, thick leaves and thorns. Other plants that found here are Barringtonia, Melaleuca leucadendron, Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels, Atalantia monophylla DC. ,etc.
- Plant society on a cliff is a special plant society found on the steep cliff consists of Euphorbia lacel Craib., Crinum Lily, White spot arum, Hibiscus tiliaceus, Manikara hexandra (Roxb.) Dubard and Morinda corcia Ham, etc.
- Sea grass source is another form of sea plant society found on a quiet coast. At present, would be found only one type which is Jangaow Krang Glass.
Wild Animals
Because of the varieties of terain in the Chumporn Islands National Park such as mangrove forest, mountains, islands, caves, beaches and sea, let us find many kinds of animals in each area, the important ones are varieties of sea birds such as Ardeidae, Laridae, Black-headed Ibis, Swifts, etc. Varieties of reptiles such as Indiam or Bengal monitor, Water Monitor, Reticulated Python, Siamese hawksbill turtle, Green turtle and Sea Snake. Varieties of mamal animals such as Macaca irus, Flying fox, dophing, whale, and sea cow, etc. Most of coral reef that found here are hard corals such as staghorn coral, hump coral, soft coral, covered coral, and this place we can find the highest volume of black coral which are the animal in sea fan class in Thailand. Moreover we can find the whale sharks which are the biggest fish in the world here.
