The Mae Chaem River was originally called the “Salak hin”. The river created a big but narrow canyon , which is called Ob Luang. The rocks and cliffs are subject to erosion by the strong currents of the river and have formed the canyon and strangely shaped rockformations. The water have to force it’s way past rocks and boulders obstructing the course which is magnificent sight.

From 1966 to 1991 the park was administered as a forest park. After more surveys by the Royal Forest Department it was gazetted, in 1991, as the 68th national park of Thailand. The area supports a wide variety of natural attritions like waterfalls, cave, hot springs and historical sites, which serve people education and recreation. At present the total park is 630 km2 and is entirely located in Amphur Chomthong, Hod and Mae Chaem, Chiang Mai province, Thailand.

Topography
The extensive, north-south running, mountain range of the park is the same range of which Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain of Thailand.

Climate
The park receives a monsoonal climate and has three distinct occasional heavy thunderstorms and strong winds.

Flora and Fauna
Due to this national park consists of the mixed forest, drydipterocarp forest, dry-evergreen forest, hill-evergreen forest and moutain-pine forest lets you can find many kinds of plant such as Tectona grandis Linn.f., Dipterocarpus, Pterocarpus macrocarpus, Xylia kerrii, Hopea odorata Roxb, Toona ciliata, Afzelia xylocarpa, Diospyros mollis Griff., D. fusca, Rose wood, Terminalia alata Heyne ex Roth., Queen's Crape Myrtle , Queen's Flower, Anisoptera costata Korth., Mammea siamensis (T. Anderson ) Kosterm., Stereospermum spp., Dipterocarpus tuberculatus Roxb., Shorea obtosa, Shorea siamensis and Pteridium aquilinum var. wightianum, etc. Moreover, the important low-level plants such as bamboo, palm and fern also have been found here.

Found animals here are Serow, Tigle, Bear, Deer, Common wild pig, Common Barking deer, White-handed gibbon, Monkey, Viverra megaspila, Rabbit, Silver Carp, Idian or Bengal Monitor and 200 kinds of birds also could be found in this national park, such as White-rumped shama, Scarlet Minivet, Spotted dove, Emerald Dove, Eudynamys scolopacea, Guineafowl, Coucal, hill myna, Parrot, Crested Serpent-eagle, Green peafowl, Siamese Fireback, Red Junglefowl, etc.

Doi Pa Chang
Doi Pa Chang resembling lied elephant, Doi Pa Chang Viewpoint, from which we can see Mae Bua Kham Waterfall below. The cliff is an example of a cliff with a rockpainting. The painting represents an elephant (Chang) in different colors.

Paintings of hunting parties and agricultural activities indicate that in the area of Ob Luang, people have lived here since the Stone Age and onwards. Carbon test shows that the findings are about 28,000 years old.

Lum Nam Mae Chaem or Salak Hin River
is located in Mae Hong Son Province. The Mae Chaem river is the biggest tributary of Amphur Hod and drains it’s water eventually in the Mae Ping river. The river passes steep cliffs, knolls, and valleys, and has some islands and sandy beaches. The diversity of landscapes gives the river an extra beautiful dimension and it is possible to admire this beauty by boat from Amphur Mae Chaem.

Mae Bau Kham Waterfall originates from the Mae Bua Kham stream and is 2 kilometers south of Ob Luang Canyon. It is a very beautiful waterfall set in a natural surrounding. The water thunders down over the rockwall for 50 meters.

Mae Chon Waterfall originated from Mae Chon stream. Follow the stream for about 1 kilometer and is 80 meters wide which makes it a fascinating sight. Also the cliffs and rocks of these falls, composed of granite and grey-white colored metamorphic rock, contributes to give the place a civic fell.

Ob Luang Gorge or Canyon
Ob Luang Gorge or Canyon it is a steep sided canyon with high cliffs. The height of the canyonwalls measured from the bridge to the average waterlevel is about 32 meters. The narrowest point of the canyon is not more than 2 meters wide while the whole canyon is about 300 meters in length.

Since B.E 2527 (1984), Archeology Division of Fine Art Department with France cooperation researched on the theme of Research on Chronolog and Evolution of Prehistoric Cultures of Northern Central Thailand and their Anthropological Characteristics.

The Tong Cave
The Tong Cave is found in Doi Pa Liang mountain. This mountain is comprising of granite and limestone. The Mae Pae stream acts as a dividing line between these two long tunnels. It is said that these tunnels are leading to Doi Chiang Dao mountain in the north of Chiang Mai province. The tunnel entrance is small but entering is possible.

Thep Phanom Hot Spring the cold water in the earthcrust is heated up by the thermal energy of the earth and, at this site, it doesn’t cool down until it is released at the surface. The average temperature of the water is 99 degrees Celsius.

Tu Poo Cave
Tu Poo Cave is small, narrow limestone cave. The entrance is very thin but the cave itself can hold up to 30 persons. Water is constantly trickling down the ceiling forming small stalactites and stalagmites. In the ceiling is a ring shaped opening so the cave is not entirely dark.

     By Car
 

Traveling from Chiang Mai take the road number 108 to the town of Amphur Hod. At Hod take the Hod-Mae Sariang road. After 17 kilometers you will reach the park headquarters. Total distance from Chiang Mai is 105 kilometers.


     By Bus
 

By means of public transportation you can take the Bangkok-Mae Hong Son line (both ordinary and air con.). The bus passes the park headquarters.
